Rafael Leao's issue with Sporting Lisbon, due to the fine that must be paid appears to be coming to an end finally. According to Portuguese outlet Record, the resolution of the impasse is largely due to Lille now taking on the full payment of the debt that Leao owes to Sporting, following his unilateral termination of the contract after the invasion of the academy in 2018 by the fans.
The French club, which signed the forward after he left, will have to pay the €20.3 million owed (€16.5 million from the initial compensation plus €3.8 million in interest), after their appeal was rejected following last year's decision by the Swiss Federal Tribunal to hold it jointly responsible with the player for the debt.
This agreement, in addition to paving the way for Leao's continued presence at Milan, could also allow the Portuguese player to stop having part of his salary seized. The final decision is still subject to appeal, meaning the forward will have to wait for the process to conclude in order to be reimbursed by Lille for the amount paid to Sporting.
