There is ongoing talk about Matteo Gabbia who is currently on loan at Villarreal. He has made 11 appearances so far in Spain between Europa League and La Liga with a total of around 790 minutes played.
The defender is seen as an option for Milan. He might be recalled, according to different recent reports to reinforce Pioli's team due to lack of fit central defenders right now.
Gabbia would be a kind of reliable option. Firstly, his numbers at Villarreal show that he played eleven games during the season, seven in "LaLiga" and four in the Europa League, which is not bad. He has a decent involvement that indicates the player has been active over these months wearing the yellow submarine's shirt.
Additionally, having gone through all the preparations with Milan, he already knows well the technical and tactical needs of the team, and he would also have the intelligence and humility to accept a secondary role once the emergency is over.
Initial contacts between AC Milan and Villarreal have been established, but it's during the week that they should intensify to reach an early termination of the loan agreement.
The transfer window opens on January 2nd, and it probably won't be possible to register him for the Coppa Italia match (against Cagliari at the San Siro), but he would certainly be available for the next game versus Empoli.
Therefore, the option is valid and will be seriously considered, especially after it's clear whether Milan will continue in European competition (Champions League or Europa League) or if they'll solely focus on the league and Coppa Italia, as pointed out by Milan News.
