C&F: Sky and Dazn compete for Serie A rights but TIM also appears

The head to head for Serie A TV rights will continue for at least another 48 hours. In fact, Thursday the new assembly of the clubs should decide on which of the offers to choose, whether that of Dazn or that of Sky (or maybe even both).

The figures are now known, with Dazn remaining ahead: €840 million for the package with 7 exclusive matches per day and 3 days in co-exclusive, with Sky offering €70 million for the 3 co-exclusive games. Figures, those of Dazn, which convinced a large part of the presidents, above all because, at this moment, approaching the figures for the current three-year period (€973 million per year) seemed almost a miracle.

It is no coincidence that there was no lack of compliments to the commission (formed by the CEO of the Lega De Siervo together with Ferrero, De Laurentiis, Lotito, Campoccia and Capellini) which carried out the negotiations with the broadcasters, with the managers of the big names such as Juve and Inter above all among the most satisfied.

All convinced on the Dazn front, then? Not exactly. Because several presidents have raised doubts regarding the internet infrastructure in Italy, with the risk that the current network cannot withstand the hypothesis of broadcasting most of the matches in streaming.

So much so that, according to what is reported by Calcio e Finanza, during the meeting someone present expressly pronounced the name of TIM as a possible partner of DAZN. Even if some of the presidents would not be enough anyway, given that in terms of fiber, Tim's one would not be at the top in Italy (considering that he still uses copper and not real fiber). Furthermore, considering the data released by Agcom, 11.8 million of the active networks are broadband and still 6 million in copper, which limits the connection speed and can make it difficult to follow the league games via streaming.

From the other point of view, there are those who still look at the step forward on a digital level. Also because in this sense the digitisation process in Italy has improved in recent years and if it were not so, a giant like Amazon probably would not have invested around €100 million per season to broadcast the Champions League in Italy.

Two opposing positions, therefore, with a solution that must however be found shortly: also because everything is at a standstill on the funds front, with the operation increasingly at risk of sinking. “Why give up so much power if we are able to manage the situation well on our own?”, Is the question that many ask in light of the all in all positive auction for TV rights.

The work for the negotiation with the consortium formed by CVC, Advent and Fsi are in fact blocked, with the two points at the center of the controversy (the first on economic and legal responsibilities and the second on archival rights) which have remained so, given that the commission for the fund deal has not yet met after the postponement of the vote on the 1.7 billion offer last Thursday, considering that three of the main subjects of that commission are also part of the one for TV rights ( De Siervo, De Laurentiis and Campoccia). So much so that even President Dal Pino, who had been working on the operation for a long time, has lost some enthusiasm about the deal.
