AC Milan managers Paolo Maldini and Frederic Massara were keen on signing a central defender earlier this summer before focusing their efforts on attacking midfielder Charles De Ketelaere instead. The main name was Sven Botman who eventually moved to Premier League outfit Newcastle United.

Simon Kjaer had been injured since December 2021 and only returned in the last friendly game against Marseille last weekend. The plans for the Rossoneri management was to sign the Dutch defender Sven Botman, but the ownership, Elliott Management Corporation (who seem to be in charge of running the club until at least a deal with RedBird closes finally in September) have blocked the deal.
In fact, as per Tuttosport, Elliott always kept in mind that Simon Kjaer has always shown leadership, strength and important qualities in defence. His return to the team is a great boost on the pitch and also in the locker room and that is why they decided to bet on him instead of investing a lot of money on Sven Botman.
