AC Milan's head coach, Stefano Pioli, has spoken to the media in a press conference today before facing Newcastle United tomorrow in the Champions League group stage.
Tomorrow, another stadium, another competition: have we switched? Pioli said:
"We have to do it. We had high expectations for our derby, a lot of positivity. It was a strong disappointment, but we have the Champions League. Fortunately, because it was the only way to change our mindset. The group is tough, and we know how important it would be to start the group stage well."
How pleased were you with Zlatan Ibrahimovic's presence today?
"Zlatan was supposed to come before the derby, but he had a commitment and came today. We know how much Ibra cares about us and how important he has been for our journey. His presence is always positive. It pleased me, the management, and the teammates. We'll also meet for dinner. We are 'friends', I am no longer his coach", said Pioli.
Is this the most challenging moment since you've been at Milan?
"I've experienced beautiful moments, but also difficult ones. I feel the weight of the derby losses and if I could, I would change these results. I know I'm coaching a strong team, and I know we'll have the ability to react to such a tough derby. I'm in debt to the fans because last year, when we played really badly, they always supported us. And I'm in debt because I'm the coach who lost the most derbies in a year, but we will do everything to make this season positive."
What will it be like to face Sandro Tonali as an opponent? Pioli added:
"It will be exciting, I will hug him with great affection. It will be very emotional for him to return to San Siro, and we wish him the best, but from the match after the one against us."
Has the time needed for the newcomers to concentrate been underestimated?
"I think we felt it more than the newcomers who hadn't experienced the previous derbies. They approached the game with more calmness, which doesn't mean lack of concentration. After 3-1, the game became more difficult. There's a Milan that didn't show everything it can give."
What did Zlatan Ibrahimovic say to the team or to you? Pioli answered:
"Today is the preparation day for an important match. I think he spoke individually. Then, he talked to me about many things, especially about the new players and then our things."
At the beginning of each season, the goal is set to improve the previous season. The Champions League starts tomorrow: what does it mean to improve this season?
"It would mean going all the way. Actually, it's about focusing step by step. Tough, balanced group. PSG is the favourite, but Borussia Dortmund and Newcastle are strong, and points can be taken from each other. But the experience we've gained can be useful, and tomorrow's match can already be useful for the standings."
Pioli, what kind of team is Newcastle, and will there be any changes?
"It's the classic English team with a lot of intensity and physicality. They have several players over 6 feet 3 inches, but also with quality players. Fikayo returns to the lineup, otherwise, he wouldn't be here."
