Head coach Stefano Pioli spoke to DAZN in the post-match of Milan - Genoa 3-3. Here are his statements, as relayed via Milan News.
An analysis of the match from the perspective of attitude:
"We started poorly, in the first 15-20 minutes we didn't have the right compactness. Then we played the game, creating and making a lot of mistakes. It's not a matter of commitment, it's a matter of having approached the game with great generosity and quality, we had created a lot too. Then we conceded a goal that could have been avoided considering how we were in that defensive phase."
The performance:
"We made the performance but we weren't able to bring home a victory that would have been very important for the standings, we haven't won in 4 league games. The fans have chosen this type of protest and we just have to respect them."
How much does this situation with the fans bother you? Pioli said:
"We need to stay focused to perform well until the end. Our fans have been an added value over the years. They will have their reasons if they have chosen this protest. We have the qualities to do better, we have the chance to finish the season well."
Today there was little balance between the two phases, the opponents were well-organized in counterattacks:
"Against Juventus it was a completely different game, we never went behind there. Today we went behind, we tried to press high and often succeeded. Of course, when you mistime your exit or opponents skip past you, you risk leaving some space open. It was a different game that we managed well after the first half. Even on the second goal, we should have defended better. It's a shame not to have won considering what my players put on the field. In Turin it was a different type of game, today we were forced to play differently. If you want to be offensive, you take some risks. I would understand your evaluation if we had conceded the 3-3 in open play but that's not the case, we were organized and that's our mistake. I changed the formation because the energy was dropping, I put on an extra defender but the result wasn't what I wanted."
How negatively did the elimination from the Europa League by Roma affect the judgments?
"It affected us rightly, it was one of our objectives. We could have done better, in those two games we didn't manage to perform and it's clear that in the final balance of the season, this elimination will be a negative aspect."
Rafael Leao was substituted amid boos:
"When I make substitutions, I don't think of doing something strong or demonstrating something. Rafa was too little involved in the opponents' area, I needed a winger who would do more of that and Noah did. Not all games are the same and not all performances are of the same level."
