AC Milan are getting closer to hiring Paulo Fonseca as the new coach to replace head coach Stefano Pioli.
Before deciding his future, though, the former Roma coach will finish his second season on Lille's bench, with which he is fighting for a spot in the next Champions League, and then he will consider what to do.
How will Paulo Fonseca's Milan play?
As pointed out by Calciomercato.com, at Lille, he alternates between a 4-2-3-1 and a 4-3-3 formation, focuses on ball possession, applies full-field pressing, and the play primarily develops on the wings.
Since returning to France, he has reverted to his previous style compared to his experience in Italy on Roma's bench, where he had chosen a three-man defence after starting there with a 4-2-3-1. If he were to come to Milan, here's how the lineup would look like considering the players currently in the squad (including Olivier Giroud, who will go to MLS, and will probably be replaced by a forward coming from the market).
(4-3-3): Maignan; Calabria, Tomori, Thiaw, Hernandez; Loftus-Cheek, Bennacer, Reijnders; Leao, Giroud, Pulisic.
Fonseca at Roma:
Paulo Fonseca arrived in Italy, on Roma's bench, in the summer of 2019 to replace Claudio Ranieri. The Portuguese coach came from Shakhtar Donetsk, where he had won the championship three years in a row. At Roma, he achieved fifth and seventh place finishes.
After two seasons, his adventure in Italy ended, and after a break, he signed with Lille in the summer of 2022. Three years later, Fonseca might return to Serie A, and his name is on Milan's list.
