According to reports from Corriere dello Sport this morning, the rumors about AC Milan's significant interest in Dutch midfielder Mats Wieffer have been confirmed.
He was left out of the Euro 2024 squad due to an injury he sustained at the end of the season. The reasons for this move by the Rossoneri are very clear. The first task of the new coach Paulo Fonseca will be to restore a defensive balance that was practically forgotten last season, with Milan recording by far the worst defensive phase among the top teams.
In this sense, Wieffer would have the right characteristics: he is a defensive midfielder who would be more than capable of providing greater coverage and acting as a link between the defensive and midfield areas. He has an imposing physique (188 centimeters) and, in recent seasons with Feyenoord and also with the national team, he has made significant appearances in European competitions and the Champions League.
Corriere dello Sport reports this morning that new, more concrete contacts are expected in the coming days between AC Milan's management and the player's entourage. In this regard, Wieffer's absence from the European Championships could be an advantage since it would allow the Rossoneri to finalise the potential deal in the coming weeks. The challenge will be to convince Feyenoord.
The 24-year-old player has a contract until 2024, and therefore the Dutch club is not forced to discount Wieffer's price, which is valued at 30 million euros. Milan will have to deliberate on this.
Meanwhile, regarding another Dutch player being targeted in the market, Joshua Zirkzee, there have been no significant advancements between the club and the Bologna striker's agent.
The difference is that the forward was called up at the last minute to Germany for Euro 2024, which could prolong the timelines. Arsenal and United are keeping an eye on him but have so far only inquired for information and have not initiated any negotiations.
