Last night France, not without some difficulty and scares, beat Iceland 2-1 in Paris at the Parc des Princes in a 2026 World Cup qualifying match. Mbappé and Barcola scored the decisive goals, overturning the visitors’ initial lead.
Two Milan players were on the field: Maignan, who played the entire match as starter, and Adrien Rabiot, who came on in the final 15 minutes to help protect the result after the team had been down to ten men for some time following Tchouaméni’s red card.
Rabiot’s entry was met with boos from the Parc des Princes crowd, the home stadium of PSG, whose fans do not hold much affection for the former player after his highly criticized departure and the recent match against Marseille this season. The reception angered coach Didier Deschamps, who defended Rabiot:
“It is unacceptable. He is a French national team player wearing this shirt. His life at the club is not my concern, even though Adri is solid enough. He made them a bit uncomfortable on the last recovery play. There is no reason for this. If I have to base my decisions on who plays where, against which opponent, whether at the Parc or elsewhere, it is absurd. Even if it is a minority, no player should go through this. He is a French national team player. He is French, like all the others.”
