Former Massimo Ambrosini, speaking to Cronache di Spogliatoio, discussed the Rossoneri’s playing issues and different formations. Here are his words.
On the formation and style of play
"The formation matters if you have ideas. In my opinion, the formation should serve to showcase ideas and options and to bring out the proposals you have in mind. If you lack that, you can use any formation, but the problems remain, the shortcomings come out and the gaps emerge. Como 1907 play against Inter Milan with five at the back or three, yet on the pitch they were a team with ideas and a match plan, a strategy. Inter, in the first half, struggled to get past the halfway line and Como defended with five. What does that mean? If you have ideas that can be effective for a match, the formation cannot stop you from being ultra-attacking or from being defensive."
On AC Milan’s situation
"AC Milan at the moment, and in fact throughout the whole year, have not shown that they possess a range of options, of ideas that could support their players in the attacking phase. This has been the main problem. Compared to other teams, Milan have fewer options, fewer solutions, so the issue of formation for Milan can be somewhat beside the point. You can even field 6,000 attackers, but if you don’t have ideas and solutions to make them play, they will take very few shots on goal."
