Next summer, Milan will have to do more than just tweak the squad: they will need to rebuild it in key areas. To truly be competitive, in Italy and in Europe (the one that really matters, hopefully), they won’t need experimental gambles or disconnected signings. What they’ll need is certainty, personality, and players suited to a clear idea. And that idea must have a single director: Massimiliano Allegri. If the club dismisses the rumours regarding the national team and decides to rely on him, they must fully back him without excuses; otherwise, it will be the usual noisy and inconclusive transfer market, as relayed via Milan News.
In defence, a leader is needed, not a disguised backup
Among the departments that need strengthening is the defence. Milan need an experienced centre-back, someone who commands, reads the game, organises, and drives his teammates forward. Pavlovic and Gabbia have given important responses this season, but it’s not enough. To raise the level, especially on European nights, a proper defender is needed, one who brings order and leadership. De Winter? An excellent alternative, but this year he has too often shown inconsistency. Useful in rotation, but not the profile to build a new back line around. If you want to make the leap, that’s where you need to place a man who shifts the balance, much like what was done with Modric in midfield.
Winger, mezzala, and centre-forward: this is where the future is decided
Then there’s the flank, another weak point, especially if the aim is to play a 4-3-3. A reliable wide player is needed, whether a full-back or a midfielder, but one with pace, awareness, and consistency. In midfield, meanwhile, Milan must stop thinking small: a profile like Goretzka would be perfect, and they would do well to move quickly, because midfielders like that, experienced and complete, are not easy to find on the market. Up front, enough confusion: a true number nine is needed, physical and decisive. It is simply unacceptable that between Gimenez, Nkunku, and Füllkrug they do not reach 10 goals in a season. Without a leader at the back, energy in midfield, and goals up front, you get nowhere. And Milan should have understood that by now, especially since Allegri isn’t asking for anything more.
