On Friday late afternoon, Como ran aground once again and suffered their second consecutive defeat, this time against Sassuolo. Yesterday, Napoli were the ones to definitively wave the white flag after a home loss to Lazio. Also yesterday, Roma stumbled again, failing to overcome Atalanta, who left the Olimpico with a point. All these results bring a smile to Milan and Juventus, who, however, are called upon today to finish the job away at Verona and at home against Bologna, respectively.
It is a major opportunity for both the Rossoneri and the Bianconeri to create some distance between themselves and their pursuers in the race for Champions League qualification. La Gazzetta dello Sport is well aware of this, headlining its online edition:
"Juve and Milan, a wildcard to play. The state of play in the sprint for the Champions League."
Allegri's AC Milan currently have 63 points, three more than Juventus (whom they will face next Sunday) and five more than Como and Roma, who are level in fifth place. The fixture list will not be particularly easy, but three points today would create a significant safety margin. Of course, they need to rediscover their scoring touch and the best possible versions of Leão and Pulisic.
