Time for an overhaul? AC Milan’s attack must change

The win away at Hellas Verona brought a collective sigh of relief across the Rossoneri world. After this weekend, a top-four place looks more secure, certainly more than it did on the eve of the match at the Bentegodi, when the risk of being dragged into a tight scramble was very real. All’s well that ends well. Even so, the performance in Veneto once again highlighted the usual issues. One above all: the attacking department. Despite the big names, there’s still a sense that the quartet (or quintet) is far removed from their manager’s idea of football.

Attacking unit, so many difficulties

This has more or less been a theme throughout the 2025/26 season, but it has peaked in recent weeks. A goal from a forward now feels a long way off. You have to go back to Rafael Leão’s last-gasp strike in Cremona, set up by Christopher Nkunku in a one-on-one with the goalkeeper. Since then, almost nothing, literally. Because among players like Leão, Christian Pulisic, Nkunku, Niclas Füllkrug, and the returning Santiago Giménez (who was nearly substituted just minutes into the Bentegodi match), very little is being produced. The truth is that between inconsistent fitness levels and a coach whose ideas don’t align with the characteristics of these four or five players, the result is a unit that never shows real cohesion and, as a consequence, produces the bare minimum, sometimes enough, sometimes not.

Attacking unit, a revolution will be needed

That’s why, if Massimiliano Allegri stays on as expected, next season will require clarity and decisive choices. In those so-called transfer “briefings”, where the coach and the club’s management must (or should) align on the technical project, the focus will have to be on identifying and signing players better suited to Allegri’s philosophy. In other words, forwards capable of leading the line (even on their own) and with the patience and composure to make the most of the limited chances created. To be clear, players like Nkunku or Füllkrug don’t really fit that profile. Even Leão and Pulisic are borderline. The feeling is that, if Allegri remains, a major overhaul will be necessary, starting, perhaps, with the attack. This was reported via Milan Press.
