In an investigation by the Milan Public Prosecutor’s Office, Gianluca Rocchi is accused of sporting fraud for allegedly selecting referees favourable to Inter in certain matches. There are three charges listed in the notice of investigation reviewed by AGI.
One states that Rocchi, “in his role as referees’ appointing official for the Italian Referees Association (AIA), in collaboration with several individuals at the San Siro stadium, during a Coppa Italia match, ‘arranged’ the appointment of the match referee for the Serie A fixture Bologna–Inter (20 April 2025), choosing Andrea Colombo as a referee considered favourable to the away team, Inter, who were competing for the league title in the final stages of the season.”
In the second charge, the scope broadens. Rocchi, the prosecutor writes, “acting as appointing official, together with others at San Siro during the first-leg Coppa Italia match (2 April 2025), ‘arranged’ or ‘shielded’ the appointment of referee Daniele Doveri, assigning him to officiate the semi-final of the tournament (23 April 2025), in order to ensure that Inter would subsequently have referees other than the ‘less favoured’ Doveri for the possible Coppa Italia final and for the remaining Serie A matches,” which were of “greater importance for the Milanese club.”
Finally, the third charge relates to Udinese–Parma on 1 March 2025, when, “in his capacity as VAR supervisor, together with other individuals, during the course of the match he influenced VAR official Daniele Paterna, inducing him to call an on-field review by referee Fabio Maresca in order to award a penalty to the Friulian side, despite Paterna holding a different view.”
