Today begins AC Milan’s period without Luka Modrić. Last week, with just a handful of minutes left in the big match against Juventus, the Croatian star was struck in the face by Manuel Locatelli during an aerial challenge and clearly came off feeling worse.
He suffered a cheekbone fracture, which forced him to undergo surgery and to end his Milan season prematurely. Or perhaps not… In fact, considering the recovery timeline ahead of the World Cup, the final word may not yet have been said.

According to what La Gazzetta dello Sport reports, the possibility is gaining ground that Modrić could return on the final matchday of the league against Cagliari at San Siro, wearing a special protective mask. This Tuesday, the Croatian will be back at Milanello, where he will remain until the end of the season for rehabilitation, but above all to stay close to the team in this final push for Champions League qualification.
Could Modric return to the pitch this season with AC Milan?
If his recovery from surgery continues to go well and Modrić himself feels ready (after consulting with doctors and staff) he could even return for the last league match. It would also be a very positive signal to give his country ahead of the World Cup. For now, however, this remains entirely hypothetical, as relayed via those at Milan News.
