AC Milan lost at home against Cagliari 1-2. The Rossoneri team failed to secure a Champions League spot. Head coach Massimiliano Allegri spoke to the media in a press conference after the end of the match.
How do you explain this collapse?
“Explaining it is difficult. After taking the lead, we defended badly, just as we did against Atalanta and Udinese. There was very little emotional reaction. We are disappointed and bitter about missing out on the Champions League, but we have to accept the verdict of the pitch because, this is not the time to make evaluations now, evaluations will have to be made from every angle, without reducing everything to tonight’s match. We had a poor second half of the season. We lacked emotional energy. I have absolutely nothing to reproach the players for; on the contrary, I thanked them because they always put their hearts into it. The table is what we deserve.”
Did you think about resigning? Allegri replied:
“To analyse the match and the technical mistakes now... There certainly were some. But when everything ends, you need the clarity and composure to analyse everything properly. If the team finished fifth, then we deserve this position in the table. What we did was the maximum we could achieve, so there is nothing to reproach the players for.”
But Milan collapsed...
"Right now, I can’t explain this collapse. But we certainly had less emotional energy, otherwise you don’t lose five home matches."
But the players do deserve criticism... And in three months, why didn’t you find solutions?
“Certainly, I should have found the solution myself; I am the one responsible. But when you are at Milan, it is much more difficult to play decisive matches. We fell apart after the 1-0."
