In recent hours, grey clouds have gathered over San Siro. There are worrying signs for the future of the new stadium and its presence at Euro 2032. Both clubs Milan and Inter, however, remain optimistic and determined to proceed with the project according to schedule, fully aware of the potential obstacles and tight deadlines. The Italian newspaper 'La Gazzetta dello Sport' discusses the situation in today’s edition.
What is the new San Siro timeline?
According to the newspaper, between August and September, a ruling is expected on the pending appeals before the Regional Administrative Court of Lombardy against the sale of the stadium to the two clubs for €197 million. In October, Milan and Inter are expected to present the façade of the new stadium. By the end of 2026, the site remediation and the presentation of the PFTE (Technical-Economic Feasibility Project) should be completed, while between spring and summer 2027, the process should be concluded with the final approval of the project’s Implementation Plan. Work is expected to begin in 2028 and continue for three years, with the aim of having the stadium ready by 2031. Only from 2032 onwards, then, will the old San Siro be demolished, as pointed out via Milan Press.
Alongside this timeline is the UEFA schedule, which is necessary for approving the stadiums that will host Euro 2032, the tournament jointly hosted by Italy and Turkey. The FIGC must identify the five host cities and their candidate stadiums by 1 October. By March 2027, the administrative aspects, financial guarantees and contingency planning will also need to be finalised. Finally, all the stadiums must be ready by summer 2031, 12 months before the tournament.
