Christian Pulisic returned to scoring in competitive matches against Lecce after 266 days without a goal for either Milan or the United States national team, putting a long spell affected by physical problems behind him. The goal, created by a Pavlovic long ball that Pulisic brought under control perfectly before beating goalkeeper Falcone, restored the forward’s confidence and delighted owner Gerry Cardinale, who was present in the stands. For Cardinale, the American is a key figure both on the sporting side and commercially, particularly from a marketing perspective in the United States, as relayed via Tuttosport.
The player has greatly benefited from Ruben Amorim’s new system, which sees him deployed as a central attacking midfielder or second striker, with Chukwueze and Saelemaekers occupying the wide areas. This allows Pulisic to exploit the spaces left by Leao’s departure and move more freely across the attacking line.
Taking advantage of US head coach Mauricio Pochettino’s decision not to call him up for the four friendlies against Peru, Chile, Mexico and Canada, in which teammate Musah will instead feature, Pulisic will work at Milanello for three weeks to regain his best physical condition ahead of the league’s return on 11 October against Sassuolo. Meanwhile, the question of his contract renewal remains open. His current deal expires on 30 June 2027, with an option in Milan’s favour to extend it for another year. With both parties keen to continue together after two renewal negotiations fell through over the past two years, Cardinale’s direct involvement could prove decisive in getting the deal over the line.
