The January transfer window is still relatively far away, but AC Milan continues to be among the most active clubs even in these weeks. The Rossoneri are exploring possible opportunities to strengthen their squad, alongside the identification of the new Head of Football, who will join the club’s technical and management departments. Among the situations Milan are monitoring ahead of the winter transfer window is the potential signing of a centre-back.

Amorim wants to reinforce his AC Milan defence
As confirmed by the last-minute attempt to sign Gonçalo Inacio from Sporting Lisbon and the assessments of Lecce’s Tiago Gabriel, Ruben Amorim would have welcomed another addition after Mario Gila in a department that has changed considerably compared to last season. The sole reinstatement of Fikayo Tomori, who has become even more important following Matteo Gabbia’s serious muscle injury, and the gamble on Frenchman Diawara are not considered sufficient. In January, the club will try to seize the best opportunity to add depth to the Rossoneri squad. Gonçalo Inacio remains a candidate, with his valuation standing at around €40 million, but another profile could enter Milan’s radar.
According to information gathered by Matteo Moretto, one player currently being monitored by Milan is Daniele Ghilardi, a centre-back born in 2003 who plays for Roma. The player was signed in the summer of 2025 for a total fee of around €10 million and has also struggled to find playing time under Gian Piero Gasperini at the start of this season. The former Sampdoria and Hellas Verona player has accumulated just 144 minutes across four Serie A appearances, while he has yet to play a single match in the Champions League. Last year, after spending much of the first half of the season on the bench, he finished with 28 appearances in total, including 13 starts across the league and the Europa League.
Why AC Milan like Daniele Ghilardi's profile:
Daniele Ghilardi is a defender who appeals to Milan because of his technical and physical attributes, which are considered suitable for the three-man defence frequently used by Ruben Amorim. He would also meet the requirements for including Italian players on the squad lists, while his age means he is considered a prospect in whom the club could still invest with a view to the future. His contract with Roma expires in June 2030, while his salary stands at around €2 million gross per season. This was relayed via Calcio Mercato today.
