Former referee Gianpaolo Calvarese, following Milan's victory in Genoa, wanted to address the incident involving Marcandalli and Rabiot, commenting on and analysing the incident that resulted in a yellow card for the Rossoblù defender, practically as the last man, for a foul on the Rossoneri's number 12, who was through on goal with no one else ahead of him. The French midfielder himself wanted to respond to the former referee's Instagram video. These are Calvarese's words and Adrien's subsequent response:
“Did Rabiot's move represent a goalscoring opportunity? Absolutely yes. However, let us remember that, according to the regulations, for a DOGSO (denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity) offence to be established, the opportunity must be clear and obvious. This is precisely why the regulations themselves provide for the assessment of four parameters: possession of the ball, the general direction of the action, the number of defenders and the distance from the goal. In this case, considering that we are in a slightly wide position and approximately 60 metres from the goal, I consider Massa's decision to show Marcandalli a yellow card to be justifiable. However, I believe that if the referee had shown a red card on the pitch, VAR official Camplone would not have intervened," as relayed via Milannews.it.
Rabiot's response:
“In life, as in football, mistakes can be made, but you must at least know how to admit them. Constantly lying will not get you anywhere, and it is Italian football that suffers the consequences. Think about it. Bonne soirée.”
