AC Milan and Inter Milan informed Mayor Giuseppe Sala a few days ago that they do not wish to proceed with the San Siro renovation project. The two clubs cited the excessive cost of the operation relative to the expected earnings as the main reason.
Today's edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport provides more details. For the two Milanese teams, renovating the Meazza would not be at all convenient because, despite a significant financial outlay, revenues would paradoxically decrease due to the reduction in seating capacity.
In recent years, both clubs have become accustomed to having an average seasonal attendance of over 70,000 spectators. With these numbers, reducing the stadium's capacity would be a counterproductive move. For this reason, the two clubs want to build a new stadium near the current one or relocate to other areas, as pointed out by Milan Press.
