Gazzetta: AC Milan without South Americans: it hadn’t happened for 24 years

Today La Gazzetta dello Sport brought up a detail relating to the lineup of the Milan squad this season. During the January transfer market, the Rossoneri sold defenders Mateo Musacchio and Leo Duarte, an Argentine and a Brazilian.

With the departure of these two players, AC Milan currently does not have even a player of South American origin in the squad. From today until June, when the mercato reopens, Milan will therefore not be able to count on South American talents for the rest of the season.

This is a unique situation in the Rossoneri history, which has always welcomed players who have come from overseas.

The last time Milan were in the same situation was 24 years ago. It was the 1996-97 season and there was not a single player from South America in the AC Milan squad.

That was the last year without South Americans, except for the Uruguayan coach Oscar Tabarez who was  sacked.

In the following summer, the Brazilians André Cruz and Leonardo arrived to restart the 'Latin' tradition in Milan again. Who knows if the same thing won't happen in the summer of 2021.
