AC Milan's new stadium project is seeing little progress and it looks like fans will wait several more years to see a new stadium built for their team. RedBird, however, are thinking of another option.
The Athletic's journalist, James Horncastle, explained the situation and wrote the following words:
"If you want to catch a game, at San Siro, there’s no rush. Go on social media and you’d be forgiven for thinking it’s to be demolished tomorrow. It isn’t. At the very least you’ve got until 2026 when Milan and Cortina are due to co-host the Winter Olympics. What’s evident is Milan and Inter believe restructuring San Siro would cost more than building a new ground from scratch and the revenue uplift would be limited. The bigger question is whether the existing project comes off. It’s already three years old and Milan and Inter are bending over backwards to make it happen. The pandemic and a mayoral election have delayed things and city hall infuriated Inter by asking for reassurances about owner’s Suning’s reliability as a partner and their ability to follow through on a commitment this big given the aforementioned financial stresses."
James Horncastle explained that AC Milan's new owners, RedBird, could do the project alone elsewhere:
"Milan meanwhile have, perhaps not unsurprisingly, explored going it alone at another site in Sesto San Giovanni. The club’s new owners Red Bird bring immense experience in the live entertainment space and were involved in the development of Cowboy Stadium."
