Giuseppe Sala, the mayor of Milan, spoke to the media present at the 'Look of the Games' event for Milan Cortina 2026, about the new stadium for Inter and Milan:
"I think San Siro is better for the fans of both teams, but I also understand that Scaroni needs to maintain a relationship with the mayor of San Donato. They’ve made an investment, and that doesn’t concern me, nor can I oppose it."
Sala continued:
"What we can do is move forward on the path that I will outline on Monday in the city council, after which there will be the formulation of a public tender. It will be up to the teams to decide; it’s hard to say whether I’m optimistic or pessimistic. There is continuous work and daily meetings."
He concluded by clarifying:
"The project has never been blocked. The City Council took the outcomes of the public debate and turned them into a resolution. We haven’t blocked anything. It was the teams, particularly Milan, that chose to explore other avenues, and we’re always here waiting for something to be finalized. Both teams have solid ownerships. As an Inter fan, I greatly appreciate what Steven Zhang has done for Inter; his family has invested their own money. Now there is a stable and very determined ownership, which is a significant difference compared to the past."
