With their elimination from the Champions League at the hands of Bayern Munich on Wednesday evening, in a thrilling match that ended 4-3 in favour of the Bavarians, Real Madrid's season is essentially over. They are also out of the Copa del Rey, and in La Liga Barcelona now seem far too far ahead to be caught. This brings to a close one of the most disappointing seasons in the club's recent history, their first without a trophy in the past five years.
After starting the season with Xabi Alonso, the managerial role was handed mid-season to another former player, Álvaro Arbeloa. The change made little difference, and Real Madrid's performances remained inconsistent. That is why Florentino Pérez is considering yet another change on the bench this summer, in an effort to begin a new cycle.
According to the Spanish correspondent of the South American broadcaster DSports, one of the three names being considered for the Madrid job is Massimiliano Allegri, a profile long appreciated by the club's president. The other two candidates are Jürgen Klopp and Didier Deschamps, who will leave the national team after the World Cup and could reunite with several French players already in the squad.
