After the first months of settling in from January to May 2025, many were convinced that this could be the breakthrough season in red and black for Santiago Giménez. But unfortunately, that has not been the case; in fact, so far it has been a decidedly negative campaign. The ankle problem that troubled him for months and also forced him to undergo surgery effectively kept him sidelined for almost five months, but neither before nor after that has the Mexican ever been convincing.
Negative season for Santiago Gimenez
Before ending up in the treatment room, the former Feyenoord player had not scored at all in the league (in Serie A he has not scored for almost a year, since 9 May 2025 against Bologna when he netted a brace), managing only a single goal in the Coppa Italia against Lecce. And since returning to the pitch at the end of March, things have been going just as badly, perhaps even worse. On Sunday in Verona, Giménez came on in the 63rd minute, but appeared too sluggish and did not do what Allegri had asked of him, to the point that at one stage the coach was about to replace him with Füllkrug. In the end, the Italian tactician kept him on the field, but he is far from satisfied with what the Mexican is doing.
Double motivation
And yet Santiago knew very well how crucial this end of the season was for him for two reasons: first of all, to secure confirmation at Milan for next season, and also to convince Mexico’s national team coach to call him up for the next World Cup. If he does not wake up and change gear in the five matches remaining before the end of the league, the feeling is that he will fail to achieve either objective. That he may not be at 100% is completely understandable after such a long layoff, but what must not be lacking is the right attitude, the proper spirit, and the desire to be a protagonist on the pitch as he was at the Bentegodi. Otherwise, he risks losing both Milan and the World Cup, as pointed out via Milan News.
