Massimiliano Allegri spoke to DAZN after the disastrous defeat against Cagliari Calcio, which cost AC Milan qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League.
How is this result possible? Juventus drew, a draw tonight would have been enough…
"Unfortunately, we can’t change the result. When you lose five home matches, we deserved the position we ended up in. The match had started well, then we fell apart and thought we had already achieved the result. We defended very badly as a team, but I have to say I have absolutely nothing to reproach the lads for. We did everything possible to qualify for the Champions League," said Allegri.
Now that there is no Champions League, does your future change?
“At this moment I am disappointed and angry. We missed out on the Champions League. After we had turned things around against Genoa, nobody would have expected a defeat like this. Unfortunately, in football and in sport, painfully and with great bitterness, you have to accept it. The whole season needs to be evaluated. I have absolutely nothing to reproach the lads for; they gave everything they had throughout the year.”
After the derby Milan lost six matches. What do you think could be the reason for all these defeats? Allegri replied:
“I don’t know what the reason is. We made mistakes, I made mistakes too. We had managed to get things back on track. When assessments are made at the end of the year, the result naturally pushes opinions one way or the other. We will need to be very clear-headed in evaluating the season properly.”
Today there was a complete lack of aggression. The goals conceded were completely avoidable…
“Certainly the psychological side weighed heavily in this match. We were too passive on the goals, and that had never happened before. In Genoa we had done better; it was a more tense match, and today we weren’t able to cope.”
What is Milan missing in order to become a strong club again? Will there be further meetings in the coming days regarding the club’s future?
“I don’t know. Right now the only thought is about the result we failed to achieve. Then evaluations of the whole season will have to be made. Mistakes were made from every point of view, but at this moment it makes absolutely no sense to talk about them.”
