We might finally be there: Milan seem ready to fill two positions in their organisational structure, namely those of technical director and head coach. Gerry Cardinale, after reshaping the board, dismissing Allegri and following more than two weeks of talks, meetings and reflection, has made his first decisions: Ralf Rangnick will take charge of Milan’s technical department, while Oliver Glasner will sit on the Rossoneri bench.
This is reported this morning by Corriere dello Sport, which explains that the Milan owner has therefore not followed the advice of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who will continue to deal with everything at Milan that is not related to football, away from Milanello. It is no secret that the Swede would have preferred other profiles, such as Ramon Planes as sporting director and Mauricio Pochettino as head coach, but in the end the Cardinale–Calvelli line prevailed, having from the outset decided to focus on Rangnick and Glasner. Austria are continuing their pressure to convince Rangnick to remain in charge of the national team until 2028, but the German has now decided to take charge of Milan’s technical area. To accept Milan’s offer, Rangnick requested autonomy, independence and full control over all teams, and Cardinale, with Ibrahimovic sidelined, will meet all of his demands, as relayed via Milan News today.
The presence of the German, currently in the United States with Austria preparing for the World Cup starting today, will also make Glasner’s work on the Rossoneri bench more settled. Convincing the former Crystal Palace manager was less difficult, and the feeling is that he would have joined Milan even without Rangnick. For the Austrian coach, a two-year contract plus an option for a third year is ready, worth nearly five million euros per season, including performance-related bonuses. The choice of technical director and head coach has been made; now it is up to Cardinale to decide the timing, as he will be the one to determine when to finalise the contracts and make everything official.
