According to what Gerry Cardinale had let leak immediately after the mass dismissals almost three weeks ago, the appointment of Milan’s new head coach and new senior executives was supposed to be a matter of around ten days. Instead, on Monday it will be twenty-one days since that "Black Monday", when everyone was dismissed, from Allegri to Furlani, including Tare and Moncada.
Today, Cardinale is working on the coaching appointment: in practice, Oliver Glasner is only waiting for the call, but the American executive is taking all the time he needs and also wants to thoroughly assess the names of Jaissle and Amorim.
Glasner leading the race for the Milan job:
Ever since the lengthy meeting last week in which Gerry Cardinale, Zlatan Ibrahimović and Massimo Calvelli met with Oliver Glasner, the Austrian coach has become the leading candidate for the Milan bench, regardless of the future of Ralf Rangnick, with whom he has long had a close professional relationship.
The former Crystal Palace and Eintracht Frankfurt manager already has a two-year offer on the table worth between €3 million and €4 million per year and is simply waiting for Milan to make the final move and pick up the phone. There will certainly be further contacts in the coming hours. However, they will not be the only discussions held by the Rossoneri ownership.
Milan makes contacts with Jaissle and Amorim
Gerry Cardinale wants the final say and, to achieve that, he wants a complete understanding of all the candidates on the shortlist so that his decision(which he considers crucial to avoid losing another season) is made carefully and with confidence.
For this reason, although he was very impressed by Glasner, who remains at the top of the list, Milan’s owner will meet two other candidates today or in the coming hours.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, there will be another meeting with the very young Matthias Jaissle, who currently appears to be the less likely option: there is a €6 million release clause to free him from Al-Ahli, where he also earns €10 million per year.
There will also be a fresh phone call with Ruben Amorim, whose prospects have improved in recent hours. The Portuguese coach is eager for redemption after the disappointments he experienced at Manchester United.
Before appointing the head coach, however, Cardinale wants to finalise the technical director position. Therefore, it is likely that official announcements, whoever the eventual appointees may be, will still take some time.
