During today's press conference in Perth, Alexis Saelemaekers sent a crystal-clear message to Ruben Amorim, who was seated beside him: his position comes second, Milan comes first.
Asked about his preferred role in the Portuguese coach's 3-4-2-1 system, the Belgian explained that he would simply be happy to play, promising to give his all wherever he is deployed.
His words reflected not only his willingness to adapt and sacrifice for the team, but also his awareness that this could be a defining opportunity in his Milan career.
On the day of his presentation at Casa Milan, Amorim highlighted Saelemaekers as a player capable of operating on either flank.
"[...] We need players who can beat their man one-on-one, like Saelemaekers. On the left he could be even more dangerous [...]."
In Amorim's system, wing-backs are expected to provide energy, aggression, width and a constant contribution in both attack and defence, qualities the Belgian naturally possesses.
Versatility, however, can no longer simply mean filling gaps wherever needed. Saelemaekers must now turn his selfless attitude into consistent performances, become more decisive in the final third, and prove he can be a dependable asset throughout an entire season rather than shining for a few months before fading into anonymity. His talent and intensity have never been in doubt, but now the Belgian must finally take the next step.
The closest comparison for Alexis Saelemaekers is Geny Catamo. At Sporting, Amorim trusted the Mozambican on both flanks, even using him on the left despite him being more accustomed to playing on the right, much like Saelemaekers. The Portuguese coach praised Catamo's ability to adapt to the team's needs and established him as an important part of his squad rotation.
Saelemaekers can now follow a very similar path. His willingness to adapt is the perfect starting point, but it must not be the finish line. Amorim is giving him a fresh opportunity and even a new position. It is now up to Alexis to make the most of it and prove that he is not just an excellent utility player, but a footballer worthy of earning his place at Milan once again.
