Thaw operation: after the great spring chill at the end of last season, the Rossoneri management is working to mend things with Mike Maignan and try to find a new agreement for a renewal, following the goalkeeper’s huge disappointment over the unfulfilled promise regarding the previously reached agreement for the contract extension until 2028 with an option for 2029.

Today's edition of Tuttosport retraces the story: in December 2024, with a Milan side struggling under Fonseca, CEO Furlani and sporting director Moncada reached an agreement with the goalkeeper to extend his contract, which expires in 2026, also adjusting his salary: from the 3 million euros he currently earns, it would have been raised to 5 million euros net per season plus bonuses.
The signing and official announcements seemed like a mere formality, but that was not the case, so much so that Maignan and his entourage immediately understood that someone at Casa Milan had decided to go back on their word, also in light of the missed qualification for the Champions League and the resulting lost revenues.
And so, the captain, as it is precisely Maignan who now wears the armband with the arrival of Conceição, is contemplating leaving after this disappointment, which Tuttosport describes as atrocious. At the beginning of the summer, following the sale of Reijnders, a 15 million euros offer arrived from Chelsea: despite the contract expiring in a year, Milan deemed it largely insufficient and kept hold of the goalkeeper, with the hope that Allegri and Tare could manage to mend the rift.
Maignan must stay - Allegri and Tare aim to keep him
As of now, the coach and sporting director have succeeded in convincing the Frenchman to stay in Rossonero for at least another year: now, the appointment is set for autumn to see whether or not the conditions will be in place to continue together until 2029.
Tare and Allegri are counting on it, and the situation, which until a few weeks ago seemed like a foregone conclusion, could change. Also because searching for another reliable goalkeeper like the former Lille man would involve an outlay of at least €20–25 million: it’s more worthwhile to keep Maignan, who over time has become one of the pillars of the dressing room, not to mention that he continues to benefit from the Decreto Crescita (Growth Decree). Renewing him would be a beneficial deal, both economically and sportingly: at Milan, they are hopeful and await the autumn to see whether that will be a viable path, as relayed via Milannews.it.
