Ruben Amorim's 3-4-2-1 system could be the ideal tactical setup for Nkunku and Pulisic. In the Portuguese coach's plans, Milan's No. 18 and No. 11 are expected to play as the two attacking midfielders supporting lone striker Gonçalo Ramos. Their qualities appear to be perfectly suited to the style of play favoured by the former Manchester United manager, according to today's edition of Corriere dello Sport.
Nkunku and Pulisic set to start as attacking midfielders
Nkunku's technique and Pulisic's pace are well suited to the role Amorim has in mind for them: creative playmakers operating behind the centre-forward. Gonçalo Ramos is an excellent finisher, but he performs best when surrounded by quality. That is something neither Nkunku nor Pulisic lacks, and their creativity should allow them to supply him in a variety of ways, both in tight spaces and inside the penalty area. During his time at Paris Saint-Germain, the Portuguese striker scored 45 goals in 131 appearances, although relatively few of those came as a starter. At Milan, his status is expected to change, and it will also be up to his team-mates to help him reach his full potential.
The Frenchman to begin work with Amorim immediately
Unlike Pulisic, Nkunku will start working with the new head coach from the very first day of Milan's pre-season training camp at Milanello. Last summer, he only arrived at the end of August and was not in peak condition after spending much of the summer expected to leave Chelsea. This time, he has six weeks to prepare properly for the new campaign, adapt to Amorim's tactical ideas and build on his familiarity with the club. Just a few months ago he looked set to leave in January; now, in July, he is expected to be a key starter. Football can change remarkably quickly.
