Today in Milan, the City Council will meet to vote on the resolution for the sale of the San Siro stadium. Mayor Giuseppe Sala, speaking at the inauguration of Zurich’s new office in the city center, commented on the matter. His words, reported by Repubblica, were: "I believe I have negotiated as best as I could with the teams. I have done many negotiations in my professional life, I certainly am not learning now. I did everything I could."
Regarding the council session, Sala said:
"I understand this is a divisive issue, but at this point, councilors have full freedom of thought and opinion to do their part. Of course, I hope for a decision in favor, but I certainly cannot guarantee anything."
Among the undecided in the center-left majority is the leader of the 'Lista Beppe Sala sindaco', Marco Fumagalli: "I understand his position, we will see what he does. I explained why, in my opinion, Milan needs a new stadium, and I told him ‘decide with conscience, think about it.’ I cannot say what he will vote. From how we left it last night, it is not yet decided, we will see."
The sale of San Siro and the development planned by Inter and Milan "will mark an important moment in the city and will also be a topic in the election campaign, between those in favor of this change and those against it. Unfortunately, in politics, opinions are often expressed not for what is right, but for political positioning and to oppose the mayor. I struggle to understand how part of the minority can oppose a city development project that would create a lot of work and economic activity."
Finally: "If the resolution does not pass, they would quickly move to another solution," meaning building two stadiums, one in San Donato Milanese and the other in Rozzano. From an environmental point of view, there is a risk of building on an area that is currently relatively green, like San Donato, while leaving San Siro empty. I see a danger. But I do not want to insist and I will accept in any case, without complaint, whatever the council decides, because at this point my conscience is clear, and for someone like me, that matters. On certain matters, the Council is sovereign, and I will be the first to accept any decision it makes.
