Often in his press conferences, Massimiliano Allegri stressed how important goals from the midfield are, because matches are not won by forwards alone. He even pushed the idea in the summer that Fofana and Loftus-Cheek needed to reach double figures, but the target is distant, because Milan’s midfield is not producing.
Allegri sounds the alarm, midfield not scoring enough:
As of 6 December, the Rossoneri midfielders have produced only 5 goals so far, if you do include Alexis Saelemaekers in the group. That is 7 fewer than Napoli's midfield department with 11, and 4 fewer than Inter's group which even includes Calhanoglu as the player with more goals than all of Milan’s midfield combined with 5. This was relayed via the colleagues at Milannews.it.
This number concerns head coach Massimiliano Allegri, and after the match in Rome against SS Lazio he sent a warning, because he expects far more from his midfield. The question is clear: why does Milan get so few goals from the midfield? The answer is simple. There is a finishing problem among Milan’s midfielders. Fofana takes more than 1.6 shots per match, but has hit the target only 11 times.
Rabiot the outlier:
The real outlier in AC Milan's midfield is Frenchman Adrien Rabiot, still stuck on zero goals. Under Allegri in the past, the Frenchman set his personal single-season scoring record, yet the reunion at Milan is not working. In 6 Serie A appearances, he has not hit the target once, and he has hardly tried either with 6 total attempts, 3 blocked and 3 off target.
