"I’m really excited, it feels like Christmas." These were the first words of Graham Potter in his press conference as the new West Ham manager, replacing Julen Lopetegui, who was sacked yesterday.
The English coach has signed a two-and-a-half-year contract, but his priority will be to turn around the fortunes of a team languishing in 14th place in the Premier League, not far from the relegation zone, with only six wins in 20 matches.
"I’m proud to be the head coach of this fantastic club. Great tradition, great history, great expectations, great challenge," Potter said. He has not coached since April 2023, when he was dismissed by Chelsea after just seven months in charge. "It was important for me to feel that I had chosen the right option at the right time, and as soon as I spoke with this club, it felt right," he explained.
Potter, who adds to the sparse list of British managers in the top domestic league, will have just over 24 hours before his debut tomorrow evening in the FA Cup against Aston Villa.
