Between AC Milan and Nkunku it will be a farewell; the story between the Rossoneri and the French player is already over. The most outspoken critics of the former Chelsea player and of Milan’s transfer policy might even argue that it never truly began. From the moment of his arrival as a centre-forward (despite it not being a role naturally suited to him) things took a dangerous turn and certainly did not help the player settle into a new environment like Milan’s. Now Milan must explore the options on the table.
In recent seasons Milan have brought to Milanello many players eager to relaunch (or launch) themselves coming from Chelsea. The prime example is Christian Pulisic who, aside from the last five nightmare months, has rediscovered fresh impetus. A similar path was hoped for Nkunku; instead, as Corriere dello Sport recalls, the Frenchman was weighed down by expectations. Signed for €38 million plus €4 million in bonuses, he has scored only six goals this season, with his best spell between late December and January; before and after that, nothing. Even after regaining optimal fitness, things did not improve. Partially in Nkunku’s defence, it should be noted that when he began to get into form, Milan as a team started to perform poorly.
A transfer on the horizon for Nkunku?
One of the main items on the agenda for the Rossoneri’s transfer market, therefore, will be to arrange the sale of Christopher Nkunku, the most likely scenario as well as the most desirable for all parties involved. In January, Fenerbahçe showed interest and could come knocking again, although they are currently without a manager. Regardless of whether it is the Turkish side or another club around Europe that moves for Nkunku, Milan are certain about one thing: they need at least €30 million to avoid recording a capital loss in their accounts.
