For months, Christopher Nkunku’s future seemed far from Milan. A season marked by often underwhelming performances and a lack of real consistency had led many to consider him one of the leading candidates for a summer departure. The feeling was that his journey in the Rossoneri shirt had already reached a crossroads and that a separation represented the most logical solution for both parties.

Nkunku: the finish to the season that changes perspectives

Football, however, rarely follows a predetermined script. At the most delicate and decisive stage of Milan’s season, Nkunku managed to carve out a leading role for himself, even though the Champions League objective ultimately slipped away. Goals and assists were not lacking, which is notable considering that the Frenchman almost never started matches. Clearly, this is not enough to erase the difficulties experienced in the preceding months or to justify the €37 million plus bonuses invested by Milan, but it is enough to reopen a discussion that had seemed closed.

A stay at Milan is now possible

While until a few weeks ago his name was consistently among those expected to leave Milanello, according to La Gazzetta the situation now appears different. The latest indications suggest a more thoughtful Milan regarding the striker’s future, with the possibility of him staying gradually gaining momentum. It is a decision that has its logic: giving up Nkunku now would mean parting with a player who, albeit only in flashes, has shown technical and personal qualities that are still far from fully developed, writes Milan Press.

Moreover, there is currently a degree of uncertainty surrounding Milan’s attacking department. From Leão’s recent comments to the assessments the club will have to make regarding several attacking players, Nkunku’s stay could take on even greater importance in the club’s plans for next season. The experience he has gained this year in Serie A already represents a solid foundation on which to build future considerations ahead of the coming campaign.

The real challenge begins now:

The end of the season has given Milan back a player and given Nkunku an opportunity. Next season will probably be the decisive one in determining whether the Frenchman can truly become a reliable part of the Rossoneri project or whether the exploits of recent weeks will remain only an isolated memory. For the moment, one thing is certain: from a likely surplus-to-requirements player to someone Milan has started seriously reconsidering, Nkunku may have succeeded in changing perceptions about his future.
