Ralf Rangnick has decided to close even the last remaining opening left by AC Milan’s hierarchy. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the manager has acknowledged the club’s lack of response and has chosen to end his availability, focusing exclusively on his role as Austria’s national team coach, who will make their World Cup debut in the Italian night between Tuesday and Wednesday against Jordan.
Rangnick says no to Milan
From the training camp in Santa Barbara, there is a sense of great calm regarding the coach’s future, with the Austrian federation long convinced that it can keep him beyond the competition for everyone and everything. Upon arrival in the United States, officials were already optimistic about his continued stay, and president Josef Pröll had reiterated mutual trust between the parties, emphasising the strength of the project and communication with the coach. This conviction has only grown stronger as the days have passed.
For his part, Rangnick has never publicly answered questions about Milan and has continued working with his national team, confirming to federation leaders his intention to continue the technical project even after the World Cup, with a contract that could run until 2028. The timing of the signing, before or after the tournament, does not appear to be a priority for him: what matters is the clarity of the project.
Diametrically opposed positions
The Austrian coach perceived a clear signal: on one side a federation that wants him at the centre of the project and gives him responsibility; on the other, Milan, which after initial talks a few weeks ago has made no further concrete moves. This is a situation Rangnick is not used to and which has led him to develop a certain impatience, as relayed via Milan News.
In discussions with Gerry Cardinale and Zlatan Ibrahimović, the coach had clearly outlined his conditions: full control of the sporting area, without external interference. This request concerned 360-degree management of the technical side, from the choice of head coach (with names such as Oliver Glasner or Alexander Jaissle as possible references) to the club’s executive structure and scouting.
Among the profiles indicated were figures such as Johannes Spors for the role of sporting director and Christopher Vivell for the scouting department, as well as extended control over the youth sector and working methodologies, consistent with his football philosophy based on intensity, pressing, and collective organisation.
Focus on the present with the national team
Milan, dealing with a phase of deep restructuring after failing to qualify for the Champions League, had listened to the demands without reaching a final decision. And as time passed, Rangnick took note of the situation, choosing to turn the page and focus definitively on his current role with the national team.
