Arriving last summer from Torino for a fee close to €20 million, Samuele Ricci seemed destined to carve out an important role in Milan’s new era. Coming off his experience with Torino, where he had also worn the captain’s armband, the Italian midfielder was nevertheless unable to establish himself consistently during the season that has just ended.
Under Massimiliano Allegri’s management, Ricci found playing time mainly as an alternative option in the midfield rotation, finishing the campaign with 34 appearances across Serie A and the Coppa Italia. His tally of one goal and four assists reflects a respectable season, but one that fell short of the expectations that had accompanied his move to Milanello.
Amorim must decide Ricci’s future
Despite an inconsistent level of performance and a role that was often secondary, there are currently no concrete reports suggesting a possible transfer away for the 2001-born midfielder. His future therefore remains unwritten and will inevitably depend on the assessments of new head coach Ruben Amorim.
The Portuguese manager will be tasked with getting the best out of those players who, over the past season, failed to fully express their potential, and Ricci undoubtedly falls into that category. His technical qualities, ability to control possession, and young age remain highly valued attributes within the club, as relayed via Milan Press.
The coming weeks will therefore be crucial in determining what role the midfielder will play in Milan’s new project. For now, there are no signs of a departure, but neither are there any guarantees regarding his place in the team. Through his work on the training ground and the first indications from pre-season preparations, Amorim will decide whether Ricci can become a key figure in Milan’s future or whether the paths of player and club will ultimately diverge after just one season.
