Going into the off-season, among the few certainties of the summer, regardless of who would have been appointed as Milan’s manager or how the club would have been structured, was the expected departure of Santiago Gimenez.
The Mexican striker, for whom the Rossoneri invested just over €30 million in total in January 2025, failed to live up to expectations, partly due to a number of physical setbacks that affected his performances. From a technical perspective, he appears to be outside the club’s plans, and even from an environmental standpoint, a change of scenery seemed like the ideal solution. However, that may no longer be the case.
Gimenez sidelined, no buyers: does he stay?
Santiago Gimenez arrived at the World Cup full of hope: his Mexico side impressed, but he certainly did not. He played limited minutes and was never able to make an impact. In his final match, the last-16 clash against England, he was forced off the pitch with an ankle injury: a serious sprain that will keep him out for around two months.
The injury has significantly disrupted Milan’s plans. After undergoing surgery on his right ankle during the winter, he has now suffered a sprain in the same area and is expected to be out until at least the end of August. According to Tuttosport, this will make it extremely difficult for the Mexican striker to attract potential buyers.
As a result, Gimenez could even remain at Milan until at least January, serving as a backup option to Ramos.
