Milan's performances in recent weeks have not been up to standard, also because one of their key strengths has been lost: defensive solidity.
Milan: how many difficulties in defence
After last season's disastrous campaign, Max Allegri set himself a major objective from the start of July: to tighten up the defence in order to get back to good results.
The objective was achieved for much of the season, during which a solid defence was seen right up until the final few matchdays, when there was a reversal in the trend.
As reported this morning, in the first 28 rounds the 'Diavolo' conceded 20 goals (an average of 0.71 per match), whereas from the Lazio game onwards they have conceded 12 goals in 8 matches (an average of 1.5), going from being one of the best defences in Europe to the fifth best in Serie A.
The training camp to find new solidity
As reported by Tuttosport, the Italian coach wants to use the training camp to rediscover balance, which will be necessary in the final two matches to secure a Champions League place.
The defensive solidity of the first months also helped the attack, which was often not very effective but was certainly more composed when fewer goals were being conceded at the back.
