It has been almost a week since Gerry Cardinale's mass dismissals: last Monday, the Rossoneri owner sacked everyone he considered responsible for the failure to qualify for the Champions League. As things stand, Milan are without a CEO, technical director, sporting director, and head coach. Cardinale and Ibra are proceeding by trial and error, and there is still no definitive name in place. For the sporting department, as of today, the leading combination could be Ralf Rangnick as technical director and Oliver Glasner as head coach. But anything can still happen.
Glasner at Milan with Rangnick as technical director?
This morning, Corriere dello Sport attempted to bring some order to the chaos of names and situations that have emerged in recent days regarding Milan. In particular, after the club received rejections from Iraola and Xavi, and made enquiries about Jaissle and Pochettino, the current frontrunner for the managerial position is Oliver Glasner.
The German coach, who managed to lead Crystal Palace to three trophies in a single year, including a European title, is being strongly backed by Ralf Rangnick, the other major name of the moment whom Milan would like to appoint as head of the technical area. New contacts with both are expected between tomorrow and Tuesday.
Rangnick will soon need to sit down with Austria, where he is national team manager and whom he will lead at the World Cup, to understand both the short-term and post-World Cup plans. He will soon leave for North America and therefore will not be able to take on a primary role immediately, which is a significant issue. Zlatan will not be there either, so it will be necessary to find other figures quickly to keep everything running. A direct meeting with Glasner is also expected in the coming hours.
At the moment, Oliver Glasner remains the most highly rated candidate, but over the last six days it has become clear that everything can change very quickly, especially given the different choices coaches may make.
As Iraola did: he waited patiently and will now, in all likelihood, become Liverpool's new manager.
Milan's interest in Arne Slot:
Yesterday, the Reds dismissed Arne Slot, who was immediately linked with Milan by French sources. Having won a Premier League title last year and a Dutch league title the year before, the Dutch coach will be sounded out.
This season has been below expectations, with some questionable management of the dressing room, but above all there is the issue of a substantial salary and the need to present a convincing project. In short, the club is navigating by sight, without a clear course.
